A player for the pig

I have now been working more than 3 years in the lovely city of Brussels and I have the last 18 months had the fortune of living here full time. One of the first things I have become to understand is why expats don't want to leave again. When I arrived I had a goal of walking the streets of Brussels and driving the roads of Belgium. One of my goals here is to visit all large cities in Belgium and afterwards know a lot about Belgium.

St Anthony’s church

Warnach is very small village at the natural centre is the church. The St Anthony’s church, is a neo-classical building surrounded by its cemetery. It was built in 1860 and renovated thorough in 1987, in a decidedly contemporary style. The artist Louis Marie Londot from Namur was responsible for painting the arch. The three-bayed nave follows a round of the façade and ends in a narrower, rectangular chancel.

In former times, the feast of St Anthony, the 17th January, was the occasion where pilgrims from the entire region gathered to pray to the hermit saint for the protection of their cattle and mainly, of their pigs. A piglet is the western emblem of Saint Anthony.

On this day, pork was sold after the celebration of Mass, and the profits went to the church. Still today, the feast of St Anthony is an occasion for the villagers to come together.
