Crossing the river in a small ferry

We were driving towards Ravenstein when the GPS showed to drive straight and take the ferry. We all laughed in the crowded VOLVO S60 with 5 guys in; it was not enough that we were packed in the car; now we had to take a ferry. When we came close the ferry we laughed again; it was really tine and we all kept the smile on our faces because this is something that you quite seldom experience in Denmark.

Apparently there has for many hundreds of years been a ferry services between the provinces of Gelderland and North Brabant, and I was happy to see that something like this could survive in a modern society. It turns out that the small ferries throughout also much of the 20th century have been in the hands of the state and leased out to local handlers.

The operators of the ferries and their ferry men made sure that people and animals were brought to the other side. Even though that more and more bridges connected the sides of the river the residents of municipalities Lith, Maasdriel, Megen and West Maas and Waal were happy for the small ferries because the nearest bridges were quite far away. When the government early '80s threatened to remove the ferries, the municipalities cooperated in making sure that the ferry connections could continue to exist. They established a Ferry Foundation July 1, 1983, and it has since December 19 of that year been the owner of five ferries: Alphen-Lith, Alem, Maren, Alphen-Oijen, Maasbommel, and Megen Megen-Appeltern.

The price of a cross was pretty fair; I had to pay only 1.80 euro to cross with the car and the 5 guys we were inside. The trips was very short; less than 5 minutes but it made sure that we still had a smile on the other side.
