Rocroi - and the beautiful old cars
I didn’t know Rocroi and I had never heard about it. It turned out that Rocroi was an ancient fortress town, Ardennes département, Champagne-Ardennes region, north-eastern France. It lies 4 miles (6 km) from the Belgian frontier. The great bastions surrounding the small town in the form of a pentagon have been preserved intact and offer an excellent example of 16th- to 17th-century military architecture. Begun in 1555, the ramparts were rebuilt in 1691. I always like to be surprised and this was again a good one.
The city walls were built with heavy stones and on the sides green grass was growing. Just as I entered the village or fortress it started to snow.
I parked my car on the town square called Place D’Armes. The square was almost empty for people, no wonder it was cold and snowing and this site was far from any other activities or major cities. Just inside the city walls I saw a large bus parking and with a lot of empty tourist busses waiting for better days and weather.
A lot of old and beautiful cars were parked on the square, amongst them two old Citroen’s which I think is one of the most wonderful cars ever built. I walked around the square trying to find a place to get something to eat. I went into a restaurant that looked open but was told that I was too late. Sometimes I forget that I am in France or Belgium where the restaurants are closed from 15.00 to 19.00. The waitress laughed little bit but she was also sorry she couldn’t help me. I did another round on the town square before I went back to my car and went in to the snow.
