Nivelle - yet one of many Belgian cities with more than expected.
One of my Belgian friends had invited me to Nivelle to show me his hometown and the pleasure of being invited to a barbeque with his family. I had never visited the city before but I had driven by the sign to the town numerous of times on my way south of Brussels.
My friend Jean-Paul took me to the city first where we walked around the city cathedral which was huge and very famous. All the way around the church there was a small brocante where everything from peoples lofts or garages were hoped to be sold. After the round of the city we went back to his family house for a barbeque in the garden with his family. We had a great afternoon with a lot of local specialities amongst them his own wine made of leafs that he had picked off some trees in the local forest. The wine was considered the poor man’s champagne of the region, but it was very tasty and fresh.
After diner we went back to town to taste some of the local beer which I haven’t seen anywhere else; Jean de Nivelle
