New Years Eve in Brussels

I thought many long thoughts about leaving for the meet up in Amsterdam but I since I had obligations the following morning I came to the conclusion of staying in Brussels. One of My friends Olaf and his girlfriend Ewelina from Warsaw were in town so we agreed to join each other for a great evening in Brussels.
After a kitschy meal in a Swiss restaurant we wanted to see the fireworks at the Grand Place in the city centre. The traffic was even worse than in a Monday morning and that says a lot. We found a parking i one of the many parking houses and started to walk or let’s say just followed the crowd because we were not the only ones with that idea. Just before the entrance of the Grand Place the police had blocked the roads because the square was full – what a bummer! Due to the loads of people behind us we could not move forward or backward, so we had to stay and enter the New Year on a side street to the town square.
To make things even funnier the city fireworks turned out to be at the Palace 1½ km away from where we were. Well there is nothing a couple of good champagnes can’t fix so we opened the bottles and had our toast there amongst the thousands of other stranded people. Most of the took it with a smile like us but some got angry and started to throw firecrackers between the feet of people which were not funny.
After the champagne bottle we walked in the city centre for a couple of hours and enjoyed the scenery and the street parties that were going on.
