Finally leaving Kunst Wet

Brussels Travel Blog › entry 18 of 286 › view all entries

I have now been working more than 3 years in the lovely city of Brussels and I have the last 18 months had the fortune of living here full time. One of the first things I have become to understand is why expats don't want to leave again. When I arrived I had a goal of walking the streets of Brussels and driving the roads of Belgium. One of my goals here is to visit all large cities in Belgium and afterwards know a lot about Belgium.

Finally leaving Kunst Wet

Rue Elize, Elsene before the rain

The last 1½ year I have been living every week Monday to Friday in my aparthotel on Jozef II on Kunst Wet or Art Lois and it have been a nice time even though this area is almost too quiet.

I remember when I was looking at the aparthotels 1½ year ago I liked the apartment right away and I saw a major benifit that it was situated on top of an Italian restaurant. I was really happy - italian food a couple a times a week not bad. But to my surprice I found out the first evening that the whole area was empty every evening and almost evrything was closed including my Italian restaurant. But I quickly found out what you loose in one point can make win in another - I have no problems in finding a parking space in the evening :D I am almost alon in the area.

After staying 1½ year in an appartment that is not yours and with furniture you dont really like - it is amazing that I stayed. The place was just for sleeping and keeping my stuff. I still picture well overall it was a nice apartment but it felt like plastic , it had no soul. I had plastic flowers - these had probably only one purpose and that was to lighten up the first impression, and maybe they did, I took the appartment didn´t I. I had a very unpleasant dining table it was like sitting in a cafée with bad chairs but you dont and you cant change these furniture.

I was enormously tired of the pictures on the wall and the best part was that they were screwed in the wall - I wonder who would take them, it was you like when you stay in a very cheap motel - they do the same.

Well the edroom and the bathroom was ok - especially after I won the battle with consierce who in the beginning came in the appartment every time I left to turn down the heating and the water temp. What a funny battle that was. One good thing was that she emptied the waste every day. Overall I was not unhappy about it and I was actually happy I fought and won this appartment compared to some of the other ones I saw. The plan was that thisshould have been for a period of tops 3 month, but every month took the next so it became 1½ year!

I became to love the area ever though it was kind of a strange area - it was one hundred percent a business area but in it I found a cultural enviroment with music, acting and so on - including my favorite café with the best chicken salad - it would love one of those right now.

By now I have tasted almost all the small eating places or take aways in the area - and my conclusion is that this is a lunch area but keeping in mind that few of the sites also will be open on some different weekdays. The quarter was very close to two other quarter of Brussels and there are so many. One of the being the african quarter with the mumba chicken - very nice by the way and all the different fruits and veggies, phone shops everywhere and witha "leben" that is quiet entertaining. Next to this there were one of the many Marrocan qurters with fruit and tea shops.

Since I am to leave the area as of the first of August in order to move to Brussels in the Elsene area I thought I had to take some pictures of what I have been looking at almost every week day for months and months.
