December in Brussels

Brussels Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

I have now been working for more than 2 years in this lovely city of Brussels. The last 9 month I had the fortune of living here full time. I have become to understand why expats dont wanna leave again. One of my goals here is to visit all large cities in Belgium and afterwards know a lot about Belgium. Living in the heart of Europe also gives me the possibility to visit many of the larger cities in the middle of Europe by car or by plane. The years I am here I will try to see a lot.

December in Brussels

Grand Place

Walking around in a dressed up Brussels, dressed up for Christmas is very nice. Especially in the area of the old fish market and Grand Place. At the old fish market they have every year a sponsored christmas market and I really enjoyed the christmas market this year - it was sponsored by Estonia - in their effort to become european cultural city of some year. It gave me a possibility of getting some of their wonderful white chocolate and retaste some of the Estonian beers.

Brussels is in general too warm to get any snow at this time of the year but it is a city that like to use lights to put you in a Christmas mood. When you have snow in Brussels and Belgium as a whole it is a joke. They are absolutely not prepared for it. In a city like Brussels that stops every time it rain - can you then imagine snow!!!

All companies save on their winter tyres because there is very seldom snow - this goes also for all public transport like the busses. Everywhere you see busses blocking the traffic and especilly when the have to go up hill from the city centre. It is just amazing. I have the fortune to live in the city centre so it has no impact for me but the day when the snow fell this winter everybody kept calling in saying that they stayed home because it was hopeless to get to work.

If you are comming to Brussels and are looking for a good meal in some very fashionable surroundings you just have to visit Belga Queen. Belga Queen has a Brasserie, oyster bar, beer bar, cigar bar. Belga Queen has a fresh cuisine with some inventive attitude. It is a business lunch place but don't mind there is also a space for you.

They have menu offers with beer menu' s. It is a very Belgian place and beer is used in many preparations. I had a great beer menu last time I was there.

As a curiosity I have to say that almost everyone I have had with me in here have commented the toilet - nice a very special (walls of see-through glass - but not when you enter)

Eating in a living room
If you are in the historic centre of Brussels, walking arround in the area close to the Grand’ Place and you feel hungry, it is possible that you seek in the the touristic alleys with all the fish restaurants. In this area I can recommend "the Scheltema". Scheltema has excellent seafood specialties.

The restaurent is very nice and often full of customers - and this is also a good sign - especially when these people are Belgians. The service is quite good and more than willing to tell you about their dishes.

I think that this is one of the best restaurants in this area, and so does my Belgian collegues. My recommandations is that you should test it if you are in the streets of the historic centre of Brussels.
