Victory Park (Парк Победы/Park Pobedy) is a very special place for all Russian people. It is deeply rooted in our history and especially in its war pages. The location is not random: the place • Poklonnaya Gora (Поклонная гора) played an important role in the history of both wars: the Partiotic War 1812 and the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. From this hill Napoleon was looking at Moscow under fire when the citizens prefered to burn down the city rather than to give it to the invaders. It was also an important place in the protection system of Moscow during the Great Patrioric War.

Now Poklonnaya Gora is the War Museum decicated to the Great Patriotic War. I was there once as a child and was surprised to see some objects I had at home left from my grandfather. So I have a piece of history as well.

In front of the museum there is a monument of St.

Poklonnaya Gora
George, the patron saint of Moscow. Above it rises a stella with the figure of Nika, the goddess of victory, on its top. It was opened in the year 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and there were many debated about the monument. Well, the sculpter who made it, is the author of many other very unpopular monuments in the city. Not the best decoration of Moscow, I should say…but as the time went on people seemed to get used to it.

When you are approaching the museum from “Park Pobedy” metro station you pass five granite stones with the each of five war years on it. It takes a couple of minutes as you walk • but think how long and hard these years were duing the war till the Victory Day.

The park is a memorial to those who made it possible. You will find an Orthodox church • St.George’s, - a synagoge and a mosque. It shows that our country is a multinanional and multireligious one, and people of different nations and took part in the war as Soviet soldiers. There is  also a monument to the countries • memebers of the Anti-Hitler Coalition.

Besides the museum, there are 2 outdoor expocisions • one is dedicated to the trains of the war time and the second is about navy.

Poklonnaya Gora
Kids love it.

If you are interested in history of Russia, this is a great place for you. If you are not into it but love walking, it is also a good choice. If you’re a passionate roller, it is a must for you. If you are none of these but a real traveller who want to see the country and understand it, visit this place on 9th May, Victory Day • it will give you a lot.
