The way to Italy

Roadtrip again. This time I wanted to visit Toscana together with my son. I wanted to go to Italy before the start of the tourist season and this March turned out to be everything what I wished for in an early spring trip.

The way to Italy

On the way to Italy

Driving from Luzern towards Bellinzona is a very beautiful stretch. As always when driving in Switzerland you are driving on perfect road and you have always some of the most fantastic views. Switzerland is beautiful all the year around, and that is maybe why so many Swiss people never really leaves their country! In the winter you have the white mountain tops to watch and they stay like that for the most of the year. In the summer everything is great and green around you except these beautiful grey walls of rock.

When you are driving you will quickly notice that nobody drives fast, I have identified two reasons for that. The first is that Swiss people are Swiss, they like to respect the rules and the laws of the country, you seldom see somebody that passes a full line anywhere.

Secondly the police have cameras everywhere, especially in all tunnels and there are a lot of these on the E35. The road goes in the valleys most of the way or are following the water where that is possibly. At Bellinzone you have to drive up to 1300 meter - you can even go higher if you wanna do the old pass. From the pass it goes down again most of the way until you reach Locarno. From here you can drive along the beautiful Lago Maggiore.

The drive along Lago Maggiori is truly a fantastic drive, as long as you still are driving in Switzerland the road will be nice and broad but when you pass the border and enter Italy the road changes its nature to something cosy and chaotic at the same time - the real life begins here. Along the road you have hotels, bars and restaurants everywhere and the biggest problem is that you want to stop at each place.
