The road to Italy

Driving from Luzern towards Bellinzona is a very beautiful stretch; that from time to time is breathtaking. As always when driving in Switzerland you are driving on perfect road and you have always some of the most fantastic views.
Switzerland is beautiful all the year around, and that is maybe why so many Swiss people never really leaves their country! In the winter you have snow everywhere and all these white mountain tops and they stay like that for the most of the year. In the summer everything is great and green around you except these beautiful grey walls of rock. Their lakes are wonderful to watch from the turquoise waters of Interlaken to the amazingly beautiful lakes Luzern or Geneva.
When you are driving you will quickly notice that nobody drives fast; and I have identified two reasons for that.
Secondly the police have cameras everywhere, especially in all tunnels and there are a lot of these on the E35. The road goes in the valleys most of the way or are following the water where that is possibly. At Bellinzona the road takes you up to 1300 meter; but you can even go higher if you want to do the old pass. I have never done that but it must be breathtaking. From the pass and its tunnel, it goes down again most of the way until you reach Locarno and from here you can drive along the beautiful Lago Maggiore.
The drive along Lago Maggiore is truly a fantastic drive. As long as you still are driving in Switzerland the road will be nice and broad but when you pass the border and enter Italy the road changes its nature to something cosy and chaotic at the same time; the real life begins here, the wonderful Italian way.
Along the cozy road you have hotels, bars and restaurants everywhere and the biggest problem is that you want to stop at each place to enjoy the view and forget everything.
I have taken this way now numerous times and still it is a joy every time; it is like my holiday really starts at this moment. The temperature often changes dramatically after the Bellinzona Pass and a change of 10 degrees is not un-normal. The beauty of the landscape brings a smile to your face for sure.
