Yankees (Ecclesall Road)

Sheffield Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Travels in and around the Steel City. An irregular blog to review places I go on a general basis - in the very town where I live.
Yankees is like taking a step back in time to a period when a real American Burger joint seemed exotic and exciting.  Basically we're talking about somewhere in the mid eighties!  Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing.  In fact it's a very very good thing.

We used to come here a lot back when I was a kid - it was a regular choice for birthdays and special events.  Coming back now for the first time in years I can safely say that it has barely changed, right down to still having many of the same framed posters on the walls that I remember.  There's the woman scratching her backside with a tennis ball, Arnold Schwarzenegger from Commando, even the NFL Superstars poster seems to be the same one I remember.

If the décor hasn’t changed the food hasn't either.  The menu comprises of various US staples; steaks, pizza, pasta, Mexican chilli and of course burgers.  And these are none of your fast food joint burgers, these are huge things, properly flame grilled to your specifications and served in a toasted sesame bun with a side order of fries.

Coming in various differing flavours the highpoint of the menu is the cheese which forms part of the cheeseburger.  None of your processed cheese slices or grated cheddar here.  Instead you get a thick, creamy, rich sauce which is smothered thickly all over your burger.  It's absolutely gorgeous.  So popular is this sauce that you can add it as an upgrade to any burger on the menu or just buy it as a separate side order.  Assuming you like cheese this is an absolute must have when you’re here.

Unsurprisingly based on the nature of the food and how cheap it is, this place is very popular with families and students so it has a lively and bustling atmosphere that mixes with a rotation of pop and rock tunes.
It’s not the biggest of places so it can get very busy at times.  With no booking system at weekends you just have to turn up and take your chances - there's a waiting area upstairs should there be no tables at present and despite suggesting it might be half an hour for a table we were sat down in about ten minutes.

To sum it up:

Come for the cheese sauce, stay for the atmosphere!

Ohhhhh.....ye of little faith - they have it - both regular and spicy. It's quite good. Dip the onion rings in it.

Any other questions?

Beauty of this place is, you don't have to eat meat - they have a great veggie burger and every topping you could dream of putting on it, and the BEST onion rings in the world - even if you think you don't like onion rings, it's because you haven't had the real thing yet - and also, shakes and malts. Hmmmm.....
