Jazz at Lincoln Center
August 23, 2008
It was an absolutely perfect day to enjoy music outdoors in NYC. We planned to meet up with friends at Bourbon Street (46th bet 8th and 9th Aves...see review) for a touch of New Orleans food and music to get us in the mood. We met up with friends of mine from the NO Jazz Fest bored...Threadheads. Much like TBers, they travel around the country to enjoy jazz and blues festivals. Today, we had about 8 - 10 states represented. After enjoying a wonderful brunch at Bourbon Street, we walked up to 53rd (I think) to meet up with others at Hibernia. At this point, there were about 25 of us. After a few more drinks (we started at 1pm), it was getting time to head up to Lincoln Center to meet up with others and get our seats. The schedule of music for the day included: Pinettes Brass Band (only all girl brass band in NO), Hot 8 Brass Band w/Shamarr Allen, Betty Harris with the Marc Stone All Star Soul Band, The Campbell Brothers' Sacred Funk featuring Kirk Joseph's Backyard Horns, John Boutte and the Hot Calas, and Irma Thomas and the Professionals. Now, I was really excited to see Irma Thomas. I had missed her at Jazz Fest. OMG! This woman is about 70 years old (maybe older). She has been performing for over 50 years and she can still move and sing and tell a great story! What a great performance! Overall, this was just a perfect day...great weather, friends, and awesome music!!!
