Travelling day #2
August 4, 2008
Since our flight wasn't leaving until sometime in the afternoon, we decided to take a walk around Tromsø by day. We went to the Polar Centre and other touristy places, and it was all really nice, Especially the live king cgrabs and seals at the Polar Centre! hehe
Finally we got to the airport and our plane took off heading for Svalbard and Longyear City. At the airport it was total chaos. Because of the fog, no one had eithyer left or arrived Longyear City, a city of only about 2000 regular inhabitants, in 3 days. 600 people were waiting to get back to the mainland, while we were about 750 waiting to get to Svalbard. And the airport only has one gate, and the check in and where you claim your luggage is right next to each other in the same room, so imagine the chaos!
At the airport we were met by a friend of my mom who has lived at Svalbard for 10 years now, and works in the local government. He was kind enough to drive us to our hotel, so that we came before the airport express and could get our rooms right away. An when we came to the SAS Radisson Hotel, one of the first things we sa were two reindeers eating gras, right outside the lobby! Which is obviously very normal there..
We arrived rather late, but we came just in time for the well known Monday-quiz at Bar Barents at our hotel. We divided our group in to to separate teams, but after competing for 3 rounds, bioth teams ended up with the same score... typical!
We had a great night, especially since they have their own tax system and the Norwegian law for alcohol is not valid at Svalbard, so the drinks only cost about 40 NOk here, compared to 85 in the rest of Norway ;)
