I love these puffins!!
Had a planned boat trip again today, but since it didn't start untill 2 pm, we headed for the museum after breakfast. It was a really good museum, and it had an entire section on Svalbard during WW2, which at least I didn't know much about before. There are actually still marks in the mountains around Longyear City after the German bombings. Its this red colour in the mountains that will never go away. The museum also showed lots of the different animals to see around the island, and one could go in to a model of a mine, getting sort of an experience of how life inside the mines were.
And then it was time for our second boat trip of the week! this time we were out with a smaller boat, and we even needed survival suits and googles before we could start! It started off kind of windy, so the guide even stopped the boat twice, asking us if we wanted to break it off and go back.
But boating enthusiasts as we are, we decided to go on. We started out Isfjorden and then continued in to Sassenfjorden, where we went on land at one of the most amazing placec I have seen. The island is so amazing because it used to be under a glacier many years ago. Again, I guess the pictures speak for themselves, it is really hard to describe! After checking out the area and some fossiles we found, we had a quick meal before we continued to "Villa Fredheim". Villa Fredheim is an old hunting station in Sassenfjorden originally belonnging to Hilmar Nøis. It was built around 1920 and was were exclusive compared to othe hunting stations at Svalbard at the time. Sometimes when whale hunters did not manage to get out of Sassenfjorden before the ice covered it up, they had to stay there for the winter. And over the last 30 years or so, the hunting station has been mived several metres back due to rising sea levels!
We stopped at Villa Fredheim to pick up a German who had stayed there for 2 weeks, and he was really glad we came, because he had been stuck there for 3 days extra due to the heavy winds. After he was onboard we headed back to Longyear City after a loong long day.
