San Jose International Airport
After leaving Chicago at 6am, and a layover in Miami, we arrived in San Jose at around 1:30 local time.  We set up transportation from the airport and after we cleared customs, we found our transportation guy standing with a sign with our name on it.  We used a private company called "Anywhere Costa Rica".  We set this up before we left.  It was reasonably priced and we did not want to take a taxi.  We had heard that they try to take advantage of you and hike the prices up.  So if you can, try to set up transportation before you leave.  The van that we took was clean and comfortable.  The driver was nice and drove safely.  I don't think that I would risk renting a car in Costa Rica.  The roads are very bumpy, curvy and confusing.  Many of the roads are unmarked as well.

As we were making our way through San Jose, it was clear to us that this country was pretty poor overall.  Parts of San Jose - like any city - was dirty and the roads were bumpy.  Once we got out of the city, the countryside was beautiful.  Although our lodge was not far from San Jose, it took over an hour to get there.  North of Costa Rica, the mountains are high and the roads are winding and so it takes a while to get from one place to the next - even if it doesn't look that far on a map.
