This is the city where the most important mosque is of whole tunisia. The Main Mosque. Kairouan is called in arabic القيروان . This used to be the capital city of Tunisia. The position is about 160 km south of Tunis.

Early in the morning Marjolein, mandy and I took a taxi to the louage station in Hammamet. It did not take a long time before the louage was filled with people willing to go to Kairouan. After an trip from about 1 hour we arrived in Kairouan. We dicided what we should do, take a taxi to the medina or be though and walk the whole way. We decided to walk! Yeh sure, which direction??? So we had to ask someone in which direction we had to walk.

Kairouan the old medina
He told us which way to go. He probably followed us, when we were taking the wrong way, he showed up again and showed us the right way. That was very nice of him. During our walk we saw a lot of butcher's shops. They are very different from ours. The cow heads are hanging outside the store. And more!! My daughter walked with her eyes closed as if she was blind. I had to guide her!!! Tip for the ladies never where high heels overthere. At the end of your walk your heels will have dissapeared between the stones!! Finally we entered the Medina. This is a very big one. You could easily get lost here. After this adventure we where craving for a nice cup of coffee. But we forgot that we were in Tunisia. Brr strange coffee. The only thing what made us drink this was because we were thirsty. After almost finshing our drink we went for a walk through the big medina.
Here we had a cup of Coffee, although id really did not taste like coffee. More some instand powder with goatmilk or something like that.
Really nice litte street and shops. And those where not made for the tourists!! After asking for a hundred times we reached the main mosque. This is really beautifull and big.

And than the next "problem"  Hungry because of all the walking we had done. Where do we have to eat???  We walked outside along the medina. Everywhere we looked was the wall of the medina. We were planning to walk around the medina. Of course than we came to the conclusion that this was hardly possible. It was too big.  But we were still hungry. Than i saw a bus stop by a very nice building. I was curious and followed them. We were lucky it was a real nice restaurant which i otherwise never would have found. We entered the building and we were very surprised about the beauty of it.  We thought (we are dutch) this is very expensive. But what a suprise! It was very cheap and we had an traditional Tunisian dish. Couscous, Brique. Delicious.

We walked later on for a while and took a taxi to the louage station. This was a very nice day in Kairouan.
