And so it begins

I’m sitting on the terrace of my hostel, Secret Garden, looking out over Quito, which spreads in all directions uphill, leading halfway up the majestic green mountains that create this valley.  Sleeping in MIA was no problem as I figured, loads of people were doing it all around me.  The air conditioner however was up so high I couldn’t stay warm so I ended up chattering my teeth all night and barely slept much.  The flight over was well timed as Hurricane Fay apparently is on its way to Florida, there were definitely some mad clouds brewing over the Keys!  The scenery approaching Quito was magnificent as well with all the green lush mountains hugging glittering towns, other than that I tried to sleep and took half a bite of the worst warm ham and cheese sandwich imaginable.  Now that I’m here I'm wondering what to do, I was going to go down into the city but a girl just told me of 3 robberies in 2 days she witnessed, so I’m a bit apprehensive.  The girl is Roisin from Galway, who’s only on day 2 here so we might team up to go see the church.  Right now she’s checking her e-mail though so I’m just hanging out here, hoping she’ll come back.  I can feel altitude sickness starting, my head feels a bit crushed and I'm out of breath, as I've no experience with it at all,  I'm fully preparing to be totally ill tonight or tomorrow.
