Taking it very easy in Arequipa
September 23, 2008
Arequipa, the 1st night and all day the 2nd
day, has been very chill. Ive been sitting mostly outside in the back
garden in a hammock, enjoying the continuously warm weather and
flawlessly blue sky. Ive befriended 2 other girls, both lone
travellers like me, and we are almost the only people in the hostal at this time. The second day we finally decided to make a move to town, so wandered down through our leafy
suburb to the fantastic center square of the city. Arequipa is
beautiful but its two main attractions can be seen quite quickly, the
Ice Princess mummy "Juanita" and the enclosed monastery Santa
Catalina. We took the museum tour and saw the tiny, well preserved
mummy, but themonastery was closed by the time we reached it (and with a 30 sole price tag, we didn't
really mind missing it). In the evening we had dinner atop a rooftop
terrace near the square, and go a birds eye view of the city with the
tall proud snow capped MistiMountain smiling over us from a distance. As the sun set the square lights slowly came on, and the night view
turned out to be equally as magnificent as the day. After dinner, in
which the waiters gave us complementary usage of ponchos to keep warm,
we bummed around the hostal for a bit, but with no real life to the place we resigned to the TV room and a fairly early bed time.
