First TB meetup in Picton New Zealand.
The very first mini meetup has just taken place in Picton New Zealand, Only two couples were able to meetup, but hopefully, what we lacked in quantity we made up for with quality.
It was the very first time either couple had ever been brave enough to actually meet face to face with the faceless freinds we make on the internet and more importantly on Trav Buddies site.
We met up with Shirley and Andrew (Shirlan) at their hotel and took them off for a grand tour of little Picton. We visited the lookout point and drove down the main street, then on to Waikawa to the Marina first then on the the small settlement, then we drove out to Karaka Point and guided them to through the Maori ruins where an ancient Pa had been built on the headland. Was a pleasant walk through the scrubby bush in the sunshine and cool breeze, to the lookout down the Marlborough Sounds.
Finally, after we had wandered back to the car, we called into the local Maori Marae where the Maori people hold meetings and celebrations of all kinds. We were so lucky to find that the Waka canoe was sitting on display, so photos could be taken of that as well as of the carvings and whalebane welcome arch. We then dropped Shirley and Andrew off at their hotel while Erle and I raced home and feed the cats,
Later we returned to pick them up to go out for a few drinks and a simple meal at the local RSA Club, by now we were more relaxed and had a nice time chatting, Shirley and I played the machines a little and I was lucky enough to have a nice win to top off the evening. Nice couple, nice evening what more could we ask.
It all worked out so pleasantly that I will not be worried about meeting up with others who call through our town, and maybe I shall meet some other folk on their home territory some time in the future.
