Trav Buddy Meetup

Andrew and I were trying to figure out where to go for this year. Of course, money has to be considered. After thinking of some places and costs, we decided on the South Island of New Zealand. So here we are again. Please note that as we were here last year, there are more photoes of NZ in the 2007 trip blog.

Trav Buddy Meetup

Just left Christchurch. Had to take this photo even if it's not in Northern Ireland

Today we drove from Christchurch to Picton. We passed through a suburb called Belfast so as I was born in Belfast Northern Ireland, I had to take a photo.

We had an easy and enjoyable drive. We stopped in Kaikoura for lunch and decided that we would come back one day. The day was reasonably clear and we could see the snow on the mountains.

After heading out of Kaikoura we spotted some seals on the the rocks so we pulled over to take some photos. There was one sunbaking just a few feet away from us so I think we got some good photos.

We finally reached Picton and  spotted some one carving a life size bear. Had to take photos.

We then found the hotel that we had booked.  After settling in, it was time to head downstairs and wait for our Trav Buddy friend, Glennis and her husband Erle.

I think that we were all a bit aprehensive as this was the first time we had done this and we were the only ones. Not like we had a large group to hide behind.

A car came in to the driveway of the hotel and I recognised Glennis's smiling face. That was a good start. We introduced ourselves properly and then Glennis and Erle were kind enough to show us around Picton.  Amongs other things, they took us to some Maori ruins and a Maori meeting place. We wouldn't have known that they were there.  We told them about the bear carving but couldn't tell them what street it was on. (I sent Glennis a txt in the morning as we were leaving to let her know where it was)

We were dropped of at the hotel again but were picked up again to go to their local club for dinner.  It was a lovely meal with lovely people. Then it was time to say our fare wells.  We all felt relieved that it had gone so well and are looking forward to meeting more Trav Buddies.

More photos to come

Nice traveling with your own car. The 3 meet-ups I'd been to were awesome - like meeting old friends.

Not as good as it should be!
To give an honest opion of this hotel, if it were a hotel advertising it's room rates at about $130 NZ dollars, it would have been close to the mark. However the advertised rate for the room we had was $350, I contacted the hotel directly and they quoted me $250.
I waited and bought this room for the night through Wotif. The hotel does their own write up for this and the full rate was $350 but on Wotif was $150.
I booked it as the write up and price was good. Super kingsize round bed, balcony, great harbour views! There was a room a few dollars cheaper that had swimming pool views.
Altough the room was clean, tidy and comfortable, it needed freshened up! Our great harbour views were across the swimming pool, a car park and lots of old buildings! Then we could see the harbour. The receptionist said that it did have harbour views even though we had to look across everything else. Then she said she could move us further down the corridor where we wouldn't have to look across the carpark but just the trees then the harbour, as she agreed that the room we were in did have the worst view. Instead of moving rooms, as it was late, we opted out for a free continental breakfast.
If you are after basic, clean accomodation and can get it cheap enough, then ok but don't get the rooms at the end of the corridor!
There was no help or easy way to get luggage to the room either. We were told to go through the doors and up one small flight of stairs and that was our floor. When I aske if there was a lift to bring the suitcases up in she said it is only one fight of stairs.
Maybe I'm glad we weren't on the next floor up!
I will add photos later!
Our great harbour views!!!!!!!!!!
The bed was nice
