Super 14
March 17, 2007
After feeling totally gross from the overnight bus to Sydney, neither of us were up for anything to stressful, so we booked tickets to the Aussie Stadium to see the Rugby Union Super 14 team, the NSW Waratahs. Although it was good to tick off seeing an Aussie game of rugby, it was evident by the standard of play that both teams were near the foot of the table. A disappointing crowd - only about 18k in a 42k stadium - became a pretty disappointed crowd, as their team lost 16-10 at home to what looked like a pretty average South African Stormers team. The only sounds came from the disgruntled home fans, and although I can appreciate rugby as a game of skill, there wasn't much on show here to get much of an atmosphere and it was a million miles away from the atmosphere at footy matches back home. I did, however, blend in seamlessly with the unhappy home fans by occasionally exclaiming, "Crikey!" or "I can't believe I pay to see this week in, week out!" and even booed at the end.
