Melbourne Zoo
Not content with the monkeys in the open zoo that is our hostel, we decided to visit Melbourne Zoo, deemed to be one of the best in the world. It didn't disappoint.
The layout is fantastic and there's pretty much every type of (good) animal that you can think of, ranging from the regal gorillas to the camp-as-Christmas giraffes. Personal faves, for me, were the gorillas, some of the crazy reptiles and the elephants. The cats didn't put in a great show, though; when they were visible, they didn't do much, and certainly didn't want to pose for photos. I think the lions should be forced to perform - perhaps some form of poking stick should be sold at the kiosks. The baboons put on a real show by having a massive domestic in front of the watching crowd. That many women hanging around you is bound to cause a few fireworks, if having a face that looks like your behind doesn't already. And the orangutans never disappoint, always willing to put on an acrobatic display for the visitors.
