Pulau Tiga is a small island off of the west coast of Sabah in Malaysia. The islands were formed on September 21, 1897, when an earthquake on Mindanao caused a volcanic eruption near Borneo - near by is a sandy island and a small third island that is home to the banded sea krait, a highly venomous sea snake. The island became famous when it was used in the US and British versions of the television program 'Survivor.' At least it is now a resort, and should be more comfortable than past reality tv contestants found it.

To get to the island we had to take a ferry, that careened scarily across the face of the waves. After a trip that left our nerves jangling we arrived at the island. The accommodation was basic, but comfortable.
The ferry to Pulau Tiga - before it started going stupidly fast!
What was more exciting and noteworthy was the abundance of animal life that you could see out of the window - troops of monkeys scampering and capering around, large lizards waddling (and occasionally sprinting) along, birds, insects, Dutch tourists, it was a veritable cornucopia of nature.

It was also relaxing. The resort had a myriad of comforts to appeal; hammocks made out of fishing nets on the beach, a bar, pool, scuba and snorkeling, a bar, the sea, a bar... It was fantastic. The resort also operated a buffet meal system, meaning I could, and regularly did, gorge myself stupid on a variety of delicious food. It was the afternoon tea that remained my favourite though, tea and cake on a beautiful beach, who could ask for more?

The whole place evoked an air of relaxation, and nothing more so than the spectacular sunsets, a sight I never tired of during my stay. The whole place made me want to put my feet up and relax, and I would have done if I could move my legs... damn mountain.
