MANILA-DIPOLOG (the plane almost left us)

I met with Heather and Crislyn in the Manila airport on Sunday, August 3. We took the only flight going to the city from the metro with Philippine Airlines  (10 AM to 11 AM).

But before that, guess what? It was the first time ever that my name was ‘paged’ in the airport. The airport people had been calling us for many times and finally we heard “final call for blah blah blah…. Oh my, why on earth haven’t we heard that one? And why on earth haven’t we noticed that the people had been boarding? Oh, we were so engrossed with our chats and taking advantage of the free wifi connection (and me doing travbuddy LOL).

When we boarded, I can see (actually feel) the glaring stares from the passengers thinking perhaps ‘so these are the girls responsible for the delay’… Oh gross! Can the earth just please eat me up? Maybe am exaggerating but that’s exactly how I felt.

I was so ashamed… ah, never again, I promised myself J

And so we settled quietly in our seats like meek lambs. Finally, we arrived in Dipolog airport, my first time there. It looks almost the same with the airports of small cities around the country " no carousels, you pick up your own luggage, ‘debate’ with porters and squeeze yourself to the exit before having another ‘debate’ with tricycle drivers.

And what a discussion we had. We were overcharged, argh. We rode the tricyle to the bus terminal and we were charged 40 pesos each instead of the normal 8 pesos. It was just so near. Things like this make me sad and mad - " people taking advantage of others. And so we reprimand the driver but in the end, he won. Well we should have agreed first and foremost on how much the fare should be (lesson # 1).

Hmm, enough of ‘wrinkle-causing’ issues, hahaha.

And so, taking a tour around the city reminded me of my student days " especially during the times when I was so active supporting the causes of the indigenous peoples. We once had a prayer rally here for the Subanen people supporting them on their fight for their ancestral domain and questioning some sections of RA 7942 otherwise known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Back then, open pit mining was very common. I’m not sure what happened to it now. I’ll be glad to find out.

Anyway, so much for my thoughts. I’m usually like this - " transforming a travel blog into my very own diary LOL.

I would have loved to see more of Dipolog but we didn’t have much time. I’ll have to come back to enjoy the wild orchids, climb (or at least attempt to) the 3003 steps to Linabo Peak, relax at cogon eco-park, enjoy the falls and of course, visit the historical Dapitan - " where our national hero Jose Rizal was once exiled during the Spanish times.

well you not been late in the airport before they tell at the check in counter not to check in your luggage but take it as carry on and head straight for the security control jumping the queue and go to the front. After which you are supposed to run straight to the gate and a bus is waiting - just for you and a colleque to get a private ride to the plan ;)

And the tricycle far - me I just gave up debating the price of a ride. If it was a short ride I would pay what I thought it should cost and not what they would charge me - and then I would just walk away (same with manila taxis if they would not turn on the meter). Maybe not standard operating procedure - but it worked ok for me.
