Neuschwanstein Castle

Caught the first train to Munich early in the morning, wanted to have a full day in Munich.  The hostel was really easy to find, so close to the train station.  We dropped off our things and headed to the meeting point at Marianplatz for the free walking tour with New Sandeman.  The tour started with the Glockenspiel loacted on the New Parliment building.  It was cool watching and listening to the Glockenspiel chime.  There are two scenes to the clock, the top is a jousting match and the bottom is a celebration.  After the chiming finished our tour guide took us to Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady.  He showed us the Devil's Footprint that is located in the entrance of the church.

There's a whole legend that goes with the footprint, it's actually the architecture's footprint. Then we made our way back to Marianplatz to see Mary's column and the Old Parliment building.  We walked over to the Hofbrauhaus, which is one of the well known beer halls in Munich.  The tour was very good, gave us a great overview of Munich and all it's historical sites.  After the tour we wandered around the English Garden, this park was huge.  We ended our day at the Hofbrauhaus, tried the weisswurst (delicious) and had a couple of beers.  I really liked the beer hall, there were so many people there and everyone was having fun.  I want to come back for Oktoberfest next year.  I heard that you could become a member of the Hofbrauhous and they give you a locker for your stein, awesome.

I wish I had room in my pack to bring home a Hofbrauhaus stein. =(

Next day we joined a tour to go to Fussen and see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle.  Built and imagined by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it took almost 17 years to build and was never completed because it cost so much money and Ludwig had died.  This castle was used an the insipration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.  It was a 2 hour train ride from Munich to Fussen and another short bus ride to get to the castle base.  We hiked to the bridge that gave a great view of the castle.  It was the perfect spot to take a picture of the castle, sadly because it was the slow fall season there was scaffolding all along the side to clean the castle walls. We hiked up toward the castle entrance and this castle was even more amazing up close.  It seriously looked like something straight from the fairytale books, it was fantastic. The inside was even more extravagant than the outside.  There were a lot of swans implemented thoughtout the interior, along the chandeliers, curtains, chairs and wall paper. The swan was their family symbol.
