City of David Tour: All wet.

The journey to Israel appealed to me for reason far less pious than I, sometimes, am willing to concede. Most simply: I went to reunite with a dear friend who had, by equal parts choice and chance, settled there. After eight years apart from her, I took the plunge. And it was, rewarding beyond measure, to our friendship, and,to me as Christian.

City of David Tour: All wet.

The City of David Tour was one of our last stops. There was a movie. Historical information about the grounds on which were stood was given. There was some water demonstration about the sewage system. The big event was the trek through Hezekiah’s tunnel. The tunnel is, unsurprisingly, long and dark. Water runs through it still. And once you enter, you must follow through to the end. Our experience of the tunnel was, to me, heartbreaking because my friend’s then youngest daughter, aged 5, who was normally wild and adventurous, was horrified. I mean, frightened out her mind! She screamed at the top of her lungs: “Imma!,” which is Hebrew for “mother,” “Imma!, I wanna go back! I wanna go BACK!” It brought tears to my eyes. She was inconsolable. She screamed, and screamed, and cried, and there was nothing anyone could do. She had to stay the course.
