How Many Balls Do You Get in One Order?!?!
Melanie and I had been talking about my insane craving for Falafel balls all week......it hit me before I picked her up at the airport. OMG! There is a Guy Fieri place he reviewed on his show, Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives that is called Falafel's Drive in! San Jose is not that far from San Francisco so let's do it! :D
Picked her up and we headed straight for San Jose and the Falafel joint. Thanks to assistance from my friend at work, we were pointed in the right direction finally (*giggles*) and on our way. Melanie's cousin (Lee) who is also on TB (askmrlee) lives in the San Jose area so we called him and guess what, he happened to be on vacation this week! SWEET! He met us over at Falafel's Drive In and OMG what a cool place.
It's a walk up joint and there was quite the line, at one point..probably 20-30 people deep. Melanie and I had small gyro sandwiches and falafel balls on the side. The prices were reasonable and the food was excellent! After lunch, we decided to go to Lee's and I could work from there and he and Melanie could catch up. Melanie's cousin is awesome although he needs to update his profile on here..hint hint! LOL. We took a coffee break and I learned that Melanie is quite the little barista! She can froth milk like nobody's business! We enjoyed a great cappuccino (with extra froth) and I managed to get quite a bit of work done until........my computer crashed. LOL. Oh boy, the blue screen of death emerged and yeah, not so much as even the Windows log on screen would come on! Uuuuuugh.
It was at this point we decided we should probably get on the road anyways since it was getting late and traffic should be dying down now.But wait, what? Frozen yogurt?!?! In the words of Melissa919....."MEEELLLAAAANNNIEEEEEE". Fortunately there happened to be a fro yo place near by and guess what...they had sugar free!! YEAH...this means my drive home would be with happy Melanie, not b*&chy Melanie. :-) We stopped at this place called Willow Glen and instantly Mel whips out the camera when I spot the "no pictures/camera" sign. Uuuuugh, they have a tart yogurt and my guess is they don't want pictures with the whole Pinkberry craze. Whatever. We were happy - this place is not by the ounce, you pick a size and they put the toppings on.
They have something really good though so I give them props - Wow Cow. 9 calories an ounce - no sugar, no dairy, no fat. Ok, Melanie is redeeming herself a bit here on being a diet killer. I had the chocolate peanut butter Wow Cow which was delicious!Mel's got her frozen yogurt and off in the car we go. I'd say we got about 45 minutes down the road when my trusty co-pilot reclines and knocks out. We were stuck in pretty bad traffic through one area and she was fading fast. "Wake me when there is something good to take pictures of," she says. After about 2 hours we are nearing home and it's getting late. Sleeping Beauty awakens, "What's for dinner?" LOL. We decide we will check out Guy Fieri's actual restaurant in Sacramento, Tex Wasabi's.......

We arrived shortly before the typical noon lunchtime rush and parking was somewhat at a minimum but there is plenty of street parking in the nearby residential area. There were a number of people in line but it moves relatively fast and the food is up before you even time to find a table to sit!
Melanie and I opted to try the Gyro sandwich (small) and a side order of the falafel balls! They were incredibly yummy and satisfied this craving I've been having for falafel balls!
On the Food Network episode, they recommended the falafel sandwich and a banana shake. Although it sounds strange, it is supposed to be an excellent combination....so much so that they offer that as a combo meal (large falafel sandwich and banana shake). I was dying of thirst so I opted to go for my old stand by of diet coke!
All the food was excellent and very fresh. The gyros had large chunks of lamb meat and unless you have the appetite of a giant, get the small sandwich - it is more than enough!
Definitely looking forward to going back again...hopefully persuading Julz to join me next time as they do have menu options for those less daring....a chicken sandwich is one!
Bring cash - they do take debit cards but .90 charge for using it. And I'd recommend hitting anytime other than the noon rush if you want to get in and out.
