There are quiet , uncrowded,safe for swimming and bathing,clean, superb whitesand beaches with a crystal turquoise water .Here the sand is perfectly spherical ,it is often collected for use in aquariums.
For km in each direction west and east of this small fishing village, famous for its world surfing spots , are virgin and gorgeous whitesand beaches with rugged hills as background.
But Emaar properties,a significant developer from United Arab Emirates has announced plans to build some km away from Kuta,on seven km of waterfront several fivestar resorts,luxury residences,shops, a golf course.
This is the only area in the south of Lombok which provides some tourism of any significance.
Each year usually in February,sometimes in March(on the 19th day of the 10th month of the lunar Sasak calendar) is held during 2 or 3 days,a religious and cultural Sasak practice, the Bau Nyale Festival,"catching the nyale"(a nyale is a kind of sea worm ,Eunice sp,that appears everyyear's end),a sea worms collecting ceremony,which attracts thousands of people on the beach with fishing nets and flaslights to catch the worms as they come to the beach to lay eggs.This festival bears a legendary myth as its background:a nyale is the reincarnation'hair of a Princess named Dende Mandalika Nyale who plunged herself into the sea to avoid a war between the Princes fighting to get her hand in marriage.Is that true?
