For 50 US$ I got a visa, nice stamps in my passport and was allowed to cross the border into Zambia. First town to enter was Chipata, in which we took the opportunity to buy lots of waterbottles - what a heat. It was very crowded and noisy in the streets because of election time. Fans of different candidates running for president of Zambia tried to outrun/scream each other; the atmosphere was not too friendly.
A very bad and unsurphased road runs for 130 kms north to South Luangwa National Park, one of the most spectacular wildparks of southern Africa. During a morning and evening game drive we see an abundancy of wildlife. We park our (open!) jeep 5 meters from a group of apparently (hopefully) lazy lions. The park is known for its big number of leopards, but we saw none of them.
Our campsite was located right on the shores of the Luangwa river, infested by many hyppos. Those enormous creatures are so noisy that it seems as if they stand next to your tent. In fact this is what happens during the late evening, when they leave the river in search for vitamines. They pass at an arms length, very impressive! As long as you stay in your tent there's no danger. Having heard that hyppos are the most dangerous animals in Africa (more human victimes then any other mamal or reptile), we hope this is through...
Having survived the hyppopotamus, next morning we woke up alive and kicking. Yet another wildlife surprise is waiting. A group of elephants made there setting near the bar of the restaurant. Hopefully they leave enough drinks to us for the evening.
Next evening game drive is a disappointment. In the middle of a green pond we see four legs pointing to the sky. One of the hyppos is doing a back stroke but kicked the bucket.
