Destination Joy 2008: St. Petersburg, Russia
Here I come, Russia !!! This is our first day of a 2-day tour in St. Petersburg. Jewel of the Seas is anchored at Lesnaya Harbour. We took the whole day tour which is approximately 9 hours in total that includes a visit to the Hermitage Museum and St. Isaac's Cathedral.
Once the capital of Tsarist Russia, St. Petersburg is a very European city of Italianate palaces, ornate cathedrals and broad boulevards. It was Peter the Great's city and vision. He built the city in 1703 as Russia's "Window to the West." If Moscow is Europe's most Asiatic capital, then St. Petersburg is Russia's most European city.
Today, St. Petersburg is a cosmopolitan city with a lively cultural and artistic core. It is Russia's biggest port, a huge industrial center and truly an international city.
