Nothing like a blue house on Yaroslavov Val

The hotel was very very nice; I must say that this was one of the best Radissons I have stayed in. The room is nicely kept in bright white colours with a lot of light wood. I got a king size bed and everything was clean and done with that little extra I like.

I was waking up quiet late local time, I got up at 1030 local time , after 7 hours of good sleep. I hurried down to the breakfast table which was a delight. They had everything from fresh cherries to Japanese soup. After the breakfast I had a quick shower and went down to park the car in the hotel basement. After some discussions with a security guard I moved my car to the basement and went back to my room to get my stuff and hit the town again.

One of the many nice old houses on Yaroslavov Val

I wanted to walk in the city centre even though I had heard that Kiev was an enormous capitol. I walked down to the Golden Gate, not the bridge but a monster of a gate looking like a crossover from a Norwegian log hut and a Russian church. Sometimes mixes comes out really nice, but here it was non-sense design.

Next to it, there was a nice little park covered with yellow marquises, where the beer hungry Kiev women and men enjoyed the large bottles of beer (1l or 2l). I enjoyed the atmosphere and laughed inside; thinking of a remark from my friend Marc who said that all young people in Kiev were drinking beer all the time.

From there I walked down to the church of St.

Wonderful house on Yaroslavov Val
Sophia with the beautiful golden domes. I tried to get in but I was blocked by a herd of elderly Italian tourists trying to lift their feet over the entry while talking about their recent finding. I waited until I saw a small break in the crowd and managed to get in.

The entry fee was only 0,2 euro and I was in passing the two uniformed ticket controllers that looked like they were guarding the crown jewels. Inside, the church was surrounded by a small park where I found a bench where I could sit and read about the church and the surroundings. Next to me an elderly man with an enormous white hair was singing local moody tunes. I stayed a tune or two reading my book before I walked around the church and enjoying the silence.

The church was nice; white and well kept. I walked out again watching out for Italian elderly tourists.

The little park with cold beers next to the Golden Gate
From the big square outside the church I could see the next tourist attraction; a monastery with golden domes as well. The traffic was boosting and so was the heat. I walked there passing something that would be a main occurrence of the day; newlyweds.

Just like in Lithuania there were wedding couples everywhere, but I guess it is also due to the summer time. At the entrance of the monastery the sight was blocked by numerous of wedding couples that were fighting for the good spots. I bought a bottle of water and sat down and enjoyed the newlyweds and their all dressed up relatives, they were cute and somewhat life confirming with their happy faces and big smiles. I took some pictures of them for good memories.

Inside the monastery it looked very much like the church of St. Sophia. I walked around and then went for the view of the river behind.

I went down to the tram that brought people up from the river, brought an ice cream which fell on the ground; best way to burn the calories I suppose.

I brought a couple of waters sitting at the tramp station reading about the city. I got a better and better impression of this city by sitting there enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the Ukrainian. I was starting to really like it and I hadn't tasted the beer yet.

I walked back to the hotel to get a shower b4 I was going back to the city. Two hours I was on my way again; I started to walk towards the city centre and was amazed by the amount of people in the streets. The main boulevard is closed for traffic until 10pm local time and everybody is on the streets. I really like this concept and I would love to see it in all cities. I saw it in Rome in May as well.

I walked around for a couple of hours and decided finally that it was time for a taste of the local beer.

The square in front of St Sophie church
I found a cafe where I could enjoy the view of the people walking by at the promenade. I found Double Coffee Espresso Cappuccino Bar where I got a table on terrace facing the boulevard. (The word Boulevard is descending from the Vikings and their word Bolvaerk, which was a part of the fortification of a city or a harbour)

I have to admit I stayed there for 5 hours and more than 2 beers and I really enjoyed the sceneries; Loads of different people, concerts with great local music and much more. I had a great evening. After the stay I walked a sling in the city and I was quiet late back at the hotel where I had a good night sleep.
