Leeuwarden, here we come!
The country I am referring to is called Friesland, in local slang Fryslan. Many visitors to the Netherlands don't come any further then Amsterdam. That's a pitty. There is so much more the Netherlands has to offer. We even have a country in a country. The province of Friesland (Fryslan) is the only province in the Netherlands where the signs that shows you that you enter a town or city are bilangual. The people here are proud of their province and their culture. They keep the tradition of their own language alive.
We where lucky to have a very active TravBuddy member living in the capital of Friesland, Leeuwarden. Wendy van der Veer (Matt called her Wendy of the Feather) organised a meetup in Leeuwarden for this weekend and did a more then splendid job.
Organising everything from renting a silent boat (praamboot) for Saturday, making reservations for dinner, be sure that everyone booked their hotelaccomadation, and last but not least, renting a huge sailvessel to sail on the IJssellake on Sunday. Next to all that she organised the entire catering on the two boottrips (the Jummies as she called it :)). As a bonus she showed us around in Leeuwarden on Monday and let us enjoy the best icecream of Friesland (or the Netherlands, or the World?), it was delicious anyway! Another thank you goes to our 'fake Frysian' Rowena (she used to live in Amsterdam, and according to her TB profile - Jamarek - that's an important thing for her!). Though I didn't participate, she organised the kite-surfing on Saturday. Together with some proffesionals there was the possibility to learn how to kite-surf. According to the others who joined this was an amazing experience and it already got some of them addicted (according to their photo's I can imagine that). I am glad Wendy announced that there will be a 2nd Fryslan meetup in 2009. So I might be able to experience the kite-surfing myself. The pictures I took don't include the sailing on Sunday, since I left my camera on a safe spot in the ship. (I think I have to lend some pics from others then), the same goes for the kite-surfing.
For all the other pics, if for some reason people don't recognize themselves in the pics I can only say: pics don't lie! :D
