The real reason for my trip was to attend a conference for work with Jill. This conference was being held in Estoril, a “suburb” of Lisbon from July 27-Aug 1. So today, we had to make our way out to Estoril for the welcome reception.
We took the train from Cais do Sodré station (1.70 Euros I believe) to Estoril. Our hotel was about 4 blocks from the station, uphill (seriously, could there be more hills in Portugal?). We arrived, but were unable to check into our hotel yet, so we left our bags and walked around a bit. We had asked for a suggestion of somewhere to have lunch, but the desk agent told us there were only a few places and they were a few blocks away. We decided to just have a look around ourselves (after all, it was a beach town…it had to have restaurants), and found to our disbelief that there was an Italian restaurant right next door. We arrived back at the hotel after 3pm (the normal check-in time) and were told we would have to wait as our room still wasn’t ready. I think they took pity on us (or were concerned we would be like the other American group ahead of us in line who began to yell upon being told their room wasn’t ready), because another desk agent then changed us to another room that was ready.
After a bit of rest, we headed over to the conference to check-in and attend the welcome reception dinner. The “dinner” was being held on the plaza area in front of the Casino Estoril, which is next to the conference center, but it turned out to be only appetizers and quite a bit of really good Portuguese wine. Not that most people minded, of course.
Average hotel with poor service but a great location
The Hotel Londres is a small 5 story hotel approximately 5 blocks uphill from the Tamariz Beach, the Casino, and the Estoril and Monte Estoril train stops. The rooms were large and equipped with flat screen TV (broadcast in English, Spanish, German and Portuguese) and had large bathrooms complete with bathtubs. The hot water seemed to come and go during our visit and was particularly problematic in the mornings. The desk staff was less than helpful overall, and were often unable to suggest even a restaurant in the area (despite the fact that there was an Italian restaurant next door as we later found). Also, as a word of warning, only approximately half of the desk staff spoke English. The breakfasts were limited (breads, fruit, cereals and juices). The best service we received was at the lobby bar. The staff here was very friendly and courteous. We did not use the pool, though it looked pleasant and basically unused.
Free WiFi is available in the lobby.
