Waiting for my boat

On my second day in Kazan I woke up and headed to the River-Boat Station. My plan was to take a boat trip to Sviyazhsk, a small island-town known for its remarkable architecture. The time table promised me a boat at 9.30 am, operating Saturday and Sunday only. I arrived at the station at 9 am but….ooops…the tickets were sold out L You can buy tickets in advance but on my first day in Kazan I was at the station when the box office was already closed. Not the best start of the day. Well, I decided not to be upset but to find an alternative and I didn’t regret! I took a nice 1-hour boat trip across the Volga and Kazanka rivers (ticket costs 170 RUB, about $7, 11 am, daily). The advantage of the trip is an air cushion boat that can go below the dam and you can enjoy the Kremlin from the water.

After such a nice trip I decided to go and explore the Old Tatar Settlement. It is situated on the bank of Kaban Lake and Bulak channel. This part of the city still looks different from the rest • no modern buildings but people wearing traditional Tatar clothes, speaking Tatar and the very atmosphere of the neighborhood is different, looks like it is trying hard to escape from globalization. The landmark of the Old Tatar Settlement is the Mardzhany mosque named after a Tatar religious leader Shigabutdin Mardzhany. I walked here for some time and then decided to get back to the European world.

My destination was the famous Kazan State University, one of the oldest in the country.

IN the Volga river
It was open November 5, 1804. Nikolay Lobachevsky, a well-known mathematician, used to be the rector for many years and his house is just next door. Many celebrities studied here but the most famous student is for sure Vladimir Lenin (Volodya Ulyanov in those times). The monument to him featuring Volodya heading to the college is across the street. A really nice monument, has nothing to do with these numerous monuments in front of city halls in all Russian towns. Close to the University there is the University Library situated in a very beautiful building.

After walking a lot I was ready for some food. When in Kazan try Tatar specialties. The first thing on menu is no doubt ‘belyash’ (round meat patty). Tatar cuisine offers many types of pastry. So yummy…mmm….impossible to stand:) There is ‘peremyach’ (meat patty), ‘echpochmak’ (offen called ‘triangular’, meat and potato patty), ‘bekken’ (cabbage patty), ‘kystybyy’ (potato flat cake), ‘gubadiya’ (round sweet cake) and many others. You can also try various meat dishes and ‘tokmach’, a noodle soup.

The Volga cow
And yes, chack-chack of course, this sweet hallmark of Tatarstan.

Having enjoyed my Tatar dinner I headed to the Kremlin for a late video shoot. The city looked awesome in the light of evening sun and I was lucky to have my tripod with me to film it not in the art-house trembling camera style J I passed the dam (a great view from it, don’t miss) and reached the other bank of the Volga river. I was pretty happy with my evening pics and video but I wanted some night shoot. I had to wait till it gets dark. What to do? Just on the left there is an amusement park called Shurale but I planned it for the next day so I decided just to walk straight ahead. Then I saw a mall and said to myself “Why not to watch a movie?” It was the right thing to do and I had fun watching “Meet Dave”.

Old Tatar Settlement
The only interruption was a call from my American boss • it was Sunday and I immediately thought about something terrible and urgent but I heard “Happy Birthday!” He mixed the date (my birthday was next day) but it was very nice of him to give me a call from the States.

On my way back to the dam I dropped by a cafe and had my martini and was absolutely ready for a shoot. It was dark, I was the only one on the dam and I could take my time to enjoy the magnificent view of the Kazan Kremlin at night. I was happy  - mission fulfilled, shooting done - and headed to my hotel to have some rest before my birthday. The moment I reached the hotel it was already July 21 and I had all the rights to start celebrations, and yes, I got the first birthday text message from a friend and went to bed being a very happy xx-year old girl.
