I never had the idea to go to Ukraine, but I saw a travel program on tv about it which made me decide to visit the country. It turned out that there are multiple flights a day directly to Kiev from Amsterdam, time to go :)

Chernobyl

Checkpoint at the border of the exclusion zone (30km).

Probably one of the weirdest excursion you can make, is the one to the exploded reactor in Chernobyl. It's only a 2 hour drive from Kiev before entering the exclusion zone. It's strange to see so many people are still working and living there. There's even a supermarket where we got ourselves a beer. The guide also had one to make his hangover a bit more bareable ;)

We came very near to the reactor, only a few hundred meters away. We also visited the ghosttown of Pripyat, the Red Forest area, and we had lunch in the town of Chernobyl. The weird thing about the place is that you don't actually see a lot of the disaster that happened, other than abandoned buildings. You don't even think about the radiation that much when walking around there. Especially on a sunny day, with al the trees around it's actually a very nice area.
