Scaling in Fourvière and viewing Lyon
Aside from the great cuisine I expected and did enjoy here in Lyon, I was also surprised to find it a city of sights too. The Fourvière area rising above the Saone River is a splendid area. There is a tower that looks like La Tour Eiffel, but it is La Tour Métallique de Fourvière and built around 1895. There is also the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière to see and this is something special. There is a funicular that goes up into the hills above, but to really appreciate the views it takes a bit of walking up some steps to get there. It's well worth it for the views of Lyon in scaling upward and panoramas once at the top. It really was a pleasant surprise to see this and it was something I had not anticipated. Parts of the hills above here are part of an old Roman settlement and there are indications of it around and about, including an amphitheatre. Paris may be the 'city of lights', but Lyon is the 'city of sights' and affords a perspective from Fourvière in the hills above Lyon that Paris cannot rival being mostly flat in geography surrounding the Seine.
