Paris may be the 'city of lights', but Lyon is 'the city of cuisine'. I enjoyed some very delicious meals here, some of the best I've had in my travels. This city has much to offer in culture and demeanor too. It can't compare with Paris for sights, but it exceeds in cuisine - Lyonnaise is superb. The people and culture have finesse. Lyon is old world with modern aspects, pleasant to walk and traffic is pedestrian friendly. The two rivers of Lyon - Rhone & Saone have many connecting bridges. A Roman amphitheatre in the hills above the rivers connect with a cable car (Funicular). You can walk the steps to the top also. A taxing climb, but worth it for views on the way up. Concerts rain down on the city below like spring rain from here.
Universite Lyon - Luminere 2
Ahhh, Lyon Nights!
I was here for the International Conference on Luminescence and gave a lecture at the historic Université de Lyon. I also had some time to tour around. The city can be quite busy during the day, but the traffic is so efficiently organized, it's easy for a pedestrian to navigate and get around. At night it tends to be quiet and relatively traffic free. I liked this aspect. There is plenty to see in Lyon to satisfy anyone. I do recommend the hills above for a spectacular panorama of the city below. There is much history to explore and the city has some wide avenues and large squares to enjoy. I will remember the food most of all perhaps. Be adventurous and try new things, you will be pleasantly surprised. Some of the best French dishes served can be enjoyed with pleasure in Lyon for a lasting culinary memory. Lyon has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France. It is a reputation well deserved. Yes, the number of Michelin stars is impressive here, but the diversity, presentation and flavor speaks for itself.
