The International Conference on Luminescence is held only every three years and the who's who of scientists in spectroscopy and luminescence show up here. An award is given on such occasions for a scientist who has made major achievements in the field and is honored with the so called ICL Prize. This year it was awarded to Francois Auzel and he received the citation for the discovery of energy transfer upconversion processes in solids and for a lifetime of important contributions to the field of luminescence. I have some photos from the day and a video showing Professor Baldassare Di Bartolo paying tribute to Francois Auzel (with some Erice references of course) in a short speech that is very heartfelt. I feel rather priviledged to have been there for Prof Auzel's ICL prize lecture and Prof Di Bartolo's speech in tribute.
In the video Baldassare Di Bartolo makes a humorous and heartfelt tribute to Francois Auzel at the conclusion of his 2008 ICL Prize lecture. Text of the speech: "I remember it was many times you came to Erice and times I had to scold you because you organized an unauthorized excursion, but from then on I think you obeyed my directions. So, I want to tell you this is not a gift, this is arrivederci. This is arrivederci and I hope that we will continue to correspond, and I hope that we will continue to add the advantage of your introspection's, of your knowledge and of your wisdom. Best wishes".
