When I was getting ready on my latest trip to Japan, I was told this story by a friend who swears it happened to his friend. . . Urban myth style, right? Let me know if you’ve heard it:

Are you sure this is the right address?

Guy is visiting Tokyo, and as he always does, he grabs a hotel business card so he can show it to a taxi driver and be driven back when he wanted to come back, so as not to get the pronunciation wrong and such. The hotel didn’t have cards, but they did have matchbooks; good enough, right?

So he does that late at night, the cabbie says “Hai!” and they drive off. But the cabbie takes him to some industrial region, far away from his hotel. This can’t be right, he thinks, so he shows the matchbook again, and the driver points to the big buildings in front of them. Guy says “No, not here!” and points to the matchbook again.

Suddenly the driver seems to understand, puts the car in drive and they’re away again, and this time they do land at the hotel.

Talking to the desk clerk about this, they figure out that the driver took him to the matchbook factory!

Holla if you heard it!
