The boat started chugging away reasonably early before I was awake, but soon at breakfast the port was visible, and soon we were off an back on the bus. After 4 hours we got to Hanoi, and after a quick break straight out on to the street to a cafe for lunch. The best way to cross the road is to walk slowly, so the bikes avoid you they don’t seem to stop just swerve around you, and don;t stop or change direction as that could be fatal. We walked down to the lake in town and had a look at the shiny pagoda inside (it did have name and I’ve for gotten it, and then to Hỏa Lò or the Hanoi Hilton as it was known. The French were pretty brutal when they ran the prison but apparently when it was used for US captured pilots (including John McCain where “his” jump suit is) it resembled more like a holiday camp according to the select photos. After that back to the hotel and then a death ride on cylclons to the water puppet show (see video for self explanation) . The puppet show was very interesting but it did drag on a bit, even some of the girls singing looked bored and were chatting to each other and looking at their nails. After that a few drinks on the street, quickly hiding the chairs away as the fuzz came past and then back out onto the road again, then another drinking establishment called Highlands Coffee which Doug the token Scott of the group found novel and then walked back to the hotel.
