Off to Dodgy Bodgy
February 26, 2009
We checkout out of the hotel and then boarded a public bus/coach and
then steamed off towards the Cambodian border. The bus was fairly
efficient getting us the visas and all and passing through the
Vietnamese side was pretty painless and then through to the Cambodian
side, our passports taken off us for processing while we waited in this
sort of motorway service station Cambodian style, where I had a chicken
curry which resembled more of an anatomy lesson with all bit of foot
and gristle and odd bones. Back on the bus and with passports onto
Phnom Penh. We got here and where instantly swarmed by Tuk Tuk drivers,
onto a smaller bus to the hotel. A few of us quickly dropped our bags
off and onto the Royal Palace, lots of gold and lovely gardens (most of
which we couldn't walk in). In the evening the whole group met back
and we went to a restaurant which the profits go to a children's
orphanage. While we were there were continually being mobbed by street
children trying to sell us things. What struck me the most was the
amount of begging, rather used to the aggressive selling but all the
begging particularly by many disabled people and children is difficult
to ignore. After food some of us went to a bar called Sharky – which is
almost as bad as it sounds pretty much full of old white men and lots
of young Cambodian ladies, after a quick drink back to the hotel.
