The weekend was to be in Toldeo. But before we went there for the weekend, I had a great evening with my wife's uncle (Bruce) here in Salamanca. Bruce lives in Perth Western Australia where he looks after the programmes etc for foreign students. So he had the chance to come to Spain with a programme setup by various parts of the Spanish govt to encourage Australian students to do language studies in Spain. One of the cities to visit was Salamanca with its many language schools. So after bruce had done the tours which included Don Quijote we meet for tapas and later some supper. It felt good to speak English for most of the evening.
Every day at the school we have an additional and optional culture class.
Before I met with Bruce our culture class was on the tradition of tapas in Spain. There were over 60 people there for the talk which was given by Isabelle. She speaks very slowly and clearly which is excellent for new students to Spain.
Here are her norms about tapas:
to go tapaear (or to have tapas) is to have wine with a small quantity of food.
The most popular small quantities of food are
jamón or ham
tortilla - normally a potato omelette
The word tapa is almost synonymous with pinchon although the origin of the word pinchon relates to a small quantity of food you pinch at normally with something like a toothpick. Many bars also have Raciones. This is a plate of food for about 4 or 5 people. Important to know the difference.
1.Tapas are small portions.
2.They are not to be eaten but picked at. Tapas is not a time for gluttony.
3.Standing up at the bar is best.
4. be informal, do not talk about anything serious.
5.Do not stay at one place move from bar to bar. 30 to 40 minutes maximum.
6.Never solo always with friends
7. Listen to the waiter recite the list of tapas. In Andalucia this list can sometimes be 50 long and you can forget what is what as they literally sing them out.
8.If you are in Jaén, Granada, Almería, Córdoba, león, or Salamanca - you do not pay for the 1st tapa that comes with your drink.
