Starters (chicken breast with coleslaw and other bits and pieces): I forgot to take pictures of any of the subsequent food
Of course, this entry should be referenced to Leeuwarden, but this is the only way that I can think of to get the system to present the entries in the right order, and with the correct photographs.

The meet-up dinner was to take place at Humphrey's Restaurant, on Nieuwestad in Leeuwarden, but of course after a hard afternoon's praamsailing or kitesurfing we all needed to freshen up and have a change of clothes, and it turned out that Wendy's timetable was unduly optimistic in the time that we would need for this. So there she was, sitting in Humphreys at the appointed hour, having reserved tables for thirty-odd diners, but with no-one turning up.

Poor Wendy! But we were doing our best, and fortunately I managed to hitch a lift into the centre of town with Suat and Onur, who were also staying at the Campanile. In fact, having parked the car, we bumped into a contingent from the Eden Oranje Hotel, and so we all arrived at Humphrey's more or less together, to Wendy's great relief.

From the outside Humphrey's looks modest indeed, with a single width of shopfront, but inside it expands in all three dimensions, and as we were led through the gloom on a labyrinthine route up and left and down and right and across and up and up to the top-floor room that had been reserved for us, it reminded me of nothing so much as one of Piranesi's Imaginary Prisons. And, as usual in such places, I found myself thinking about fire exits and whether, in the panic of a conflagration when the lights failed, we would ever manage to find our way out.

However, these thoughts disappeared as we completed the final ascent to our El Dorado, a big room with three large tables, tempting menus (including an English-language version - thank you, Humphrey's!) and an anticipatory sense of the food and drink that would shortly appear. There was the usual humming and hawing over where to sit, and Wendy outlined a plan whereby we were all to move after each course, so as to encourage social mixing; but the consensus view was that, having once sat down, only a call of nature would make us get up again.

Heat rises, we were taught in physics, and Humphrey's provided the perfect experimental verification of this theory since we, at the top of the restaurant, seemed to accumulate all the heat from all the lower floors and probably from the kitchens as well.

So great was the heat that opening the three skylights had no effect whatsoever, and it was quite amusing to see everyone (including, presumably, myself) turning redder and redder as the evening progressed. Some of this was due to alcohol, but only some, and the truth of the old adage that ladies do not perspire but only feel the heat was sorely tested.

The food was plentiful and excellent, and the time flew by. Wendy had reserved space at a nearby bar, Stadscafe, but as the appointed hour came and went we were still making merry at Humphrey's. But finally the moment of reckoning arrived when Wendy had to reconcile the cash she had collected from the diners and the amounts paid in advance into her bank account with the bill presented by Humphrey's. This gave her some stressful moments since almost inevitably there appeared to be a shortfall, but finally everything was sorted out, Wendy could relax again, and we all invaded Stadscafe at last.

Here Jos very kindly stood the first round, and I had the presence of mind to order a gin and tonic, a nice clean drink that often acts as a prophylactic against a hangover when I remember in time, which isn't often. After about an hour, there was a movement towards a nearby club, but it was past midnight and as we had an early start in the morning I decided to call it a day. It was raining, but a refreshing walk in the rain (since Suat and Onur were heading for the club) seemed very appealing; and so I arrived back at the hotel at about a quarter to one, and remembered just in time to set my alarm for six o'clock, so as not to be late for the big event of the weekend - sailing on the Ijselmeer!
