The Festival
My father planned this trip so that we would have the opportunity to see one of the Tsechus (religious festival) at a Dzong (city fortress). Three words: riot of color. The fortresses are not historical buildings- they are still used in everyday life. And the people of Bhutan are not dressed up in their traditional finery for the day- they wear these garments all the time (because of some rather strict rules governing their lives).
Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan- and it's biggest city- and it is the same size as my provincial capital in Thailand.
The thakin is the national animal of Bhutan; it's said that it was created when one of the gurus combined a goat with a cow. It might just be the clumsiest animal I've ever seen on the planet.
We spent 3 nights in Thimphu. Even the smallest things were wonderful: driving there from the airport, at the festival and looking around the town, a day hike and the thakin reserve, the cultural museum, and all the people...
