Denver Zoo
November 22, 2008
One of the greatest parts about living in Denver is its availablity of free entertainment. Most of the museums and even the Denver Zoo have one free day a month. I just happened to grab a flyer from a gentleman on 16th St. that mentioned the zoo's upcoming free day. The weather turned out perfect for a Colorado winter day and a T-shirt was more than appropriate. Top that with no entry fee and it made for an excellent Saturday afternoon.
The zoo is rather large and has a lot of great animal exhibits. Much larger than the zoo in Honolulu that I was accustomed to. We grabbed our map and made our way along the path. The zoo is very easy to navigate and comes with a plethora of food options. It was crowded this day (but what can you expect on a free day?). Animal exhibits range from bears to zebras and everything in between. The rows are filled with gorgeous flowers and shrubs.
There are tons of kid-friendly activities including a carousel and train ride.
During Christmas time, the zoo puts on Denver Zoo Lights where the entire zoo is decked out in hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights. Most animals can't be seen because it is dark but some are viewable in their holding areas such as elephants and giraffes. I love looking at Christmas lights so the zoo lights was a lot of fun. Of course, be prepared to have snow on the ground and cold temperatures.
More info about the zoo can be found at http://www.denverzoo.org/ and more info about the Denver Zoo Lights is available at http://www.denverzoo.org/zoolights/index.asp

There is a bird exhibit that you can actually enter. The cups of nectar are $1 and you can actually let the birds rest on your arms to feed. Very fun if you are not afraid of birds or bird poo.
