But Juist holds a secret ... the Hammersee!
Rain water which drips into the sand has a lower density than saltwater, which makes a kind of fresh water bubble float over the saltwater around and deep under the island.
That is why Juist does not have a fresh water pipeline to the mainland - and makes the Hammersee turn into a fresh water lake.
The lake has a funny history too!
The lake is a haven for nature but it wasnt always like this!
In the 17th and 18th century Juist was cut in two parts by several big storms
Around the year 1770 people started to close the 2 km wide burst at the southern side by a dune dike.
As recently as 1928 the northern side was repaired. And by this time the water in the lake turned from saltwater to freshwater.
Theres a nice path round the lake and you can find my animals in around it include beavers!
You can also hire bikes in the village .. so if walking to Bill means too much then hire a bike
But be warned .. if the wind is blowing the wrong direction it means 1 way will be easy and the other .... well you will burn off that lovely bread!!!
