Surfers Paradise.

Surfers Paradise wasn't always called Surfers Paradise. Apparently it had a different name to start with, something very British no doubt that had little to do with its actually surroundings. It wasn't until the sixties that the mayor of the town suggested renaming it, to try and appeal to the now hundreds of thousands of visitors, mostly hippies, who were making their way to Australia's laid back shores. So what name could they use to try and attract the new age travelers who were coming to this mecca of sand, sun and surf? You guessed it.

Its a small town by Australian standards, and all we were expecting of the place was some golden beaches and a wild night life. We arrived at around 10.30, seeing the city's high rises long before we entered the city's limits.

At the club.
Billboard after billboard advertised gambling, clubbing and surfing, and it was clear that we were heading into something very different to a simple surfing town. Surfers is Australia's Ibiza, where the main type of tourists are 18 to 30's, all hell bent on having a good time. Our hostel was advertised as a bit of a party venue, and now we were starting to realise that this was par for the course in a city like Surfers. We were picked up by our hostel and eventually got into our rooms where we slept away the afternoon, shattered from the bus journey and a little damaged after our Kangaroo intestines episode. We had no plans to do much, we just went out for food and a walk about town to get our bearings. We had a knock on our room door about 8, a Northern Irish boy working for the hostel signing up people who fancied a night out.
With some Americans.
He had a good few names on his list already, and it was free in with some free drinks for us so we were easily persuaded. We had good craic, chatting mostly with two Americans, a London boy, the Northern lad and some girls from Leeds. We staggered home in the wee hours to our bunk beds and kept our heads down until noon the next day.

The next day was a scorcher, we never found out exactly how hot but it felt in the high thirties. We spent the day on the beach, soaking up the sun and allowing our inflated alcohol levels to slowly seep back to acceptable levels. The beach was simply huge, stretching for miles with perfect sand and a strong, forceful surf lapping the shores. We took it extra easy all day given our fragile state, just having some food in the city and avoiding the temptation of another night out.

Hey!!!!
We're feeling our age I think, two day hangovers can't be natural. As I write this we are just chilling on our final day in the hostel, as its overcast outside and not a day for sun worshiping. We are heading to town soon to post this, and we will probably get swept along with the current tonight and find ourselves enjoying free drinks in some random club despite having a bus to catch at 9.30 tomorrow.

We head for Brisbane, which is only 90 merciful minutes away. Just one night there before we head to Rainbow beach, where we will be making a trip to Frasier Island. This should be awesome, it's the worlds largest sand island, with an ecosystem all of its own. The only way to see it is by four wheel drive, so we have hired a big jeep along with camping equipment and we will spend three days and two night there looking at its wild dingos, sharks swimming a stones throw from the beach and its large turtle colony.

Giving it socks!
Its considered a world heritage site due to its unique nature, and we cant wait to see some truly authentic Aussie nature after all the concrete jungles we have being staying in.

Just to let you know, needless to say it's unlikely to have any mobile phone coverage or Internet access, so we wont be contactable for those few days. We'll phone you soon after getting back, most likely around Monday but dont panic if its not!  So thats our next week or so, then we do what will almost definitely be the best part of the entire trip, certainly one of the best! But we'll tell you about that really, really special part when we get closer to it!!! Hee hee.
