The Road North .......
July 4, 2008
After a lovely breakfast together its time to say good bye to Yara and Ivan ... they are heading on in a different direction today ... and to catch their flight home .... but its not goodbye ... just Au Voir ...... we will meet again .....
We have a quiet trip this time. We head north to the top of the F26 and come out at the Godafoss waterfall... almost a full circle!
We decide to head south to the next village and get some lunch... a small roadside cafe provides us with delicious home made soup and bread and some coffee.
We sit and plan the next steps ... we are heading for Husavik in the north.
Sifting through some local brochures we see a whale watching tour and we can combine this with a horse riding trip .. perfect!
Ling is excited .. .. she only met a horse for the first time on Juist just some months before!
Now she is going to ride one!
I call and book the tour and then we head out the relatively small distance to Husavik on the main road.
Its only 30km or so and we arrive and find the local tourist office and find a local guest house to stay at.
After a walk in the town we find a small coffee house and enjoy some local cuisine.... the place is empty and we have a long chat to the girl serving ... shes just back from germany ... learning german for tourism ... her dad owns the boat we are going on tomorrow :) small town huh!
We walk down to the harbour and take some pictures in the dull orange light... the light here is unusual ... some days extremely bright .. yet at times ... soft and subdued..... very unusual.
A walk back to the guest house and a welcome bed greets us ......
Tomorrow will be full of whales and horses .... any more surprises... I hope not ....!

Gentle Giants Whale Watching
Húsavík is a small town in the north of Iceland on the shores of Skjálfandi bay. It is an easy drive from Myvatan and a good stopping point off the A1.
Húsavík has become a centre of whale watching in the north due to whales of different species that frequently enter the bay. It is also home to the Icelandic Phallological Museum, which contains specimens from every mammal that lives in Iceland. We didnt view this one!
We chose Gentle Giants for our tour and can highly recommend them.
The boats are well looked after and it is clearly a well regulated industry here with plenty of safety equipment with lots of recent test dates ;)
The tour itself was good .. nearly 2 hrs long and of course we got to see some whales.
The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the whales and get us well briefed through out the tour.
refreshments were served mid trip and with a boat not too packed it was highly enjoyable.
We also took in the whales and horses ticket and enjoyed an icelandic horse ride ... the same comments fit for the well run stables.
worth visiting and enjoying the trips!
