This years expedition took me north.. to the islands of the Faroes via Denmark, then onto the land of fire and ice.... Iceland. A 3 week tour covering 6000km across some spectacular scenery and sometimes exciting travel. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did driving it!

Landfall

Landfall!

Iceland has been one of those locations that I have wanted to do for a long time. So after I bought my new G4 Challenge Discovery 3 from Land Rover events this year I decided that this was a prime opportunity to "head north".

After a few day on the Faroe Islands and an overnight ferry crossing from Torshaven, landfall was made in the tiny Fjord port of Seydisfjord.

There is not a lot to say about Seydisfjord ... its just a small port at the head of the Fjord which forms a safe port for the Smyril Line ferry, MF Norruna.  Arriving each week on a Thursday I guess the sleep village does not see much activity outside of this!!

The ferry arrives around mid morning in Seydisfjord, and once arrived it requires some negotiation with the customs.

Some useful tips here for expeditioners:

Although classed as Europe do not expect to just drive through the green lane and drive off !  You have a few formalities here!!

Do NOT take large amounts  of food in with you - there are restrictions on alcohol too and many expeditioners with large campers were getting stripped of fresh fruit, cheese, meats etc as well as being made to pay for importing alcohol.

So best to skip those crates of wine unless you would like to pay chunks of money on arrival!

If your carrying lots of fuel expect the same questions! So carry empty jerry cans only ... there are plenty of places to fill up before you hit open ground!

I was asked about how long i was staying and received a small blue customs sticker which seems to be a notice about fuel and road taxes exemption.

Carry all documents that you need and have them ready including car documents for registration, tax, insurance etc

I was also carrying radio equipment inc CB ... make sure you have the necessary licence available - Iceland btw has no CB licence .. I carry a carnet for the CB too whilst in EU anyhow. I also have my ham radio licence in my document folder.

After clearance from customs we headed off into the icy high ground to the next town called Egilstadir .

.. here we aimed to fill up with fuel, food and our own stomachs, before heading off into the interior.

** I have added some video to my page now of the trip  **

I must also add....

Im not related to this publisher in anyway ... but its one spectacular film! If you like Iceland well I guess you will like this!

Ferry Travel - Iceland and the Faroes
Travelling to the Faroes and Iceland by car can be an excellent way of enjoying the islands at your own pace and will also allow you to reach some places that normal tourist travels from Reykjavik cannot reach.

There is one slight difficulty in travelling to Iceland in your own car in that it requires a longish sea crossing using Smyrillines MV Norruna.

Heres some tips......

- book early during the summer months .. the ferry can be very busy!

- understand the ferry only visits Iceland 1 time a week!

- the sea crossing is quite long .. book a cabin it will allow you to enjoy the journey rather than being uncomfortable.

- catering on board is good and lunches dinners and breakfasts are all served - the costs are NOT included in ticket prices!! And can be alittle expensive

- The ship is well equipped with entertainment

- internet and GSM mobile phones can be used but take care on the roaming charges!

- The route for the ship changes during the summer with an enforced stop over in the Faroes .. for first time travellers this gives an excellent opportunity to visit the Faroes and 2 days is enough.

- Check vehicle heights carefully .. high vehicles attract a premium.

Over all the ship is clean and well run with a friendly crew.

Ticket prices are not cheap but the ability to use your car round Iceland and the Faroes will open up a huge amount of possibilities.
