As we headed up the F905 after just a few km we spotted a distinctive black 110 .... Ivan and Yara!
After some chat and more pics (Ivan is also a keen photographer) we decided to double back and head up the A1 to Myvatan and the Hverir fumaroles fields.
So North a short way around 50km first crossing the F907 to the A1 then North towards Myvatan.
This area is highly active and steam and numerous fumroles can be seen even driving towards Myvatan.
The Hverir fumaroles are a must see....
I guess if you find boiling mud, hissing steam vents and volcanoe fields boring then this isnt for you but this really is an amazing place .....
Also worth while visiting is the crater across the other side of the main road too ... there is a steam plant there for electricity
really amazing to see the new lava from the 80s metres deep covering tens of Kms across that area.
After our visit we headed back south to the F88 ..... ohhh F88 .... one of the best roads to see and drive.....
This is really a 4x4 route do not try this road without a 4x4 ... and in deep water you WILL need a snorkel.
the first part of the road is gravel but soon turns to black basalt sand .... evil stuff to drive on .... sticky and soft you end up drifting round corners........ then the road crosses lava fields .
There is a nice (!) walk ... around 2km across the snow to the main crater at Askja but our visit to Askja was to have a sting in the tail ..... aa rather cold one!
Arriving at Askja we slowy made our way up the mountain track ... the higher we got the colder it was and then snow ..... yep its snowing!
By the time we hit the summit it was a blizzard......
Ling is like a kid ... she had only seen snow 1 time before in Dusseldorf....
Who wants a walk in the snow??
ok ... lets go!
The crossing to the crater although 2km was hard going ... soft slushy snow underneath new fresh fallen ..... not nice
Arriving at the crater we found the slopes wet very slippery and very dangerous.
OK back to the car ........
This is harder ..... heavy snow now ... very windy .... hard to see the tracks now ..... Sticking together and helping each other we struggled back over the ice field ... we met a few people coming the other way and advise them to turn round ..... how can people walk across icefields with thin jackets and jeans .... oh man .
arriving back at the car we found the landies covered in snow .....
heaters on ..... we got out of wet clothes ... found some hot tea in the thermos (cleverly made earlier by ling!) and a snickers .....
10 mins later im feeling my fingers again and we slowly drive back down the mountain .
Askja is buried in the snow ... no where to be seen
After our adventure we drive back to Mödrudalur in the snow .... the lights on the G4 lighting the way through the snow ..... warm inside we carefully make our way across the F910 and F905 back to our corner of civilisation.
Surprised faces at the campsite when we arrive and book in ... but a hot coffee, an Icelandic pastry and tales of the days adventure finish me off ...... heading back to the tent the wind is cold and even though its nearly midnight its still light in the arctic summer..... I sleep soundly in my warm sleeping bag ... the wind howling round the tent... I fall into a deep sleep.
